Movie Editing Software Package Review: Free soundclips and music scores in Sony's Vegas Music Studio Platinum

One way to get access to free music to use in your home movies or presentations is to buy a software editing suite which comes bundled with a library of canned material. The downside of this strategy is that you really are dealing with "canned music" in the sense that it really does sound pre-packaged, mass-produced and shrink-wrapped. In many ways, the prefab nature of the music compositions found in this type of library could also be called a benefit: people will find the melodies comfortably familiar. When you don't want to go too far out of the common man's comfort zone (say for example in cases where you are looking for a soundbed for your infomercial which is intended to have mass appeal), this option could be right for you.

An In-Depth Look at the Music Library:
Reading the glossy packaging box at the retail outlet where I purchased Vegas Movie Studio 10, I was impressed to see as one of the application's features: "Use 360 exclusive royalty free soundtracks". "Wow", I thought to myself, "that alone should be worth the price of the program". This might be true if you really did get 360 complete soundtracks. But what you get instead is 360 music clips, many of which are only 15 seconds long. These music clips might be more accurately described as 360 fragments and variations of 20 soundtracks: There are 20 folders, each devoted to a single music composition of a particular mood or music genre. For example, the folder "Here Comes the Bride" contains 18 mp3 files of an orchestral recording of the traditional ubiquitous marriage background melody cut into alternate edit fragments, each of which focusses on a different mix of horns, strings, harp etc. The engineer has just created 18 versions of the same thing with the mixer board faders set slightly differently each time. (In many instances it would take a well-trained ear to identify the differences from one clip to another.)

Conclusions:
Overall, the editing features and capabilites of Vegas Movie Studio HD are top notch. If you are looking for an inexpensive video editing software package then you can't go wrong with this one. But if you already have an editing package and may have been enticed into making this additional purchase to bulk up your library of stock music to use in your home video productions, I wouldn't bother.
